2015 Stanley Groovy

2015 Stanley Groovy
2015 Stanley Groovy

You may not have heard of Stanley Groovy, and that’s OK. We’ll tell you he’s a strange -- but delightful -- guy, much more complex than he lets on, despite his “regular guy” exterior. Inside, he’s groovy -- just like the wine in this bottle. Trying to describe this wine is like trying to describe the inside of the fine artist’s mind; you may say you “get it” but really, no one gets it. And this is why what’s in this bottle will remain in generalities - simple on the outside, complex and groovy on the inside. We will say it is a blend of intriguing red Iberian varietals from Red Mountain, one of Washington’s most prominent AVAs, and is just as suitable for cellaring as it is for immediate enjoyment. Once you taste it, you’ll never confuse it with any other wine. Yeah, it’s that groovy.

Stanley Groovy isn’t afraid to stray from the crowd — he's different and he knows it, just like the wine in this bottle. Cabernet Sauvignon lends depth and complexity while intense Portuguese varietals bring a whole lot of groovy. The result? A wine that celebrates the beauty of being “different” — something Stanley is proud to lend his name to. “In my opinion, it’s the best Groovy to date,” says Ali. After we put the blend together we aged half in concrete and half in oak so it’s got the freshness and the texture that both impart. “It’s one of those wines you have to taste to believe because it looks weighty but is not heavy on the palate,” adds Ali. “It goes well with everything from pizza to fresh fish or poultry cooked Portuguese-style; anything with tomatoes, garlic, capers and citrus.”

“My favorite was the Stanley Groovy...The blend, apart from “Iberian varietals,” is secret, but it had the smell of orange zest and Christmas cookies, and the odd tension of restrained yet full flavors. It’s the kind of complexity you should invite into your life.”

Best Washington Wines of the Year, Red Blend, $25-45, 2018 Seattle Magazine Washington Wine Awards

The Walls, based in Walla Walla, is one of the most exciting new wineries to launch in Washington for the past few years. To wit: this blend, for which winemaker Ali Mayfield begins with 79 percent Portuguese varieties—Touriga Nacional, Souzão,Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz (a Tempranillo clone)—and blends in 21 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is an exotic mix of spice (star anise especially) and citrus peel, plum and violet. It’s a singular Washington blend, intellectually and sensually provocative. Pairs With: Feijoada, the Portuguese/Brazilian stew of pork, beef and beans.
